A Sludge and Deslopping Survey is a critical assessment conducted to determine the quantity and quality of sludge and slop waste accumulated onboard a vessel.

• Sludge refers to residual oil and sediments that settle at the bottom of fuel and lubricating oil storage tanks.
   
• Slop refers to the oil-water mixture typically generated during tank cleaning operations and other shipboard processes.

The main objective of a sludge and deslopping survey is to ensure the vessel is managing and disposing of its waste in accordance with:

Vessels are prohibited from discharging sludge and slop overboard and are required to dispose of such waste at approved reception facilities either in port or via certified waste collection services.
